You will need to signup for a Google account BEFORE you can use Google Custom Search.
Click 'New Search Engine' on the upper left side of the page.
Fill in 'Sites to Search'
You can add any of the following:
Individual pages: www.example.com/page.html
Entire site: www.mysite.com/*
Parts of site: www.example.com/docs/* or www.example.com/docs/
Entire domain: *.example.com
Select the Language
Fill in Name of the search engine
Click 'Create'
You will see the screen shown below indicating you were successful.
Click the 'Get Code' button
You will then be able to copy the code for YOUR search engine, to your page.

Note: For maximum compatibility your pages must specify an HTML5 doctype and a viewport. <!DOCTYPE html> <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
Once you have created your search box, you can change the look and feel of it.
The Layout Tab will show you the various layouts you can select along with a preview of how the search box will display. Once you decide on one of the layouts, click the 'Save & Get Code' button.
Copy the code, and paste it into a <div> element in your site's <body> section, where you want both of the search box and the search results to render.
The 'Themes Tab' allows you to select some predfined appearances for your search box. Again, you will be able to see a preview on the right side of the screen.
The 'Customize Tab' gives you much more choices in how you want you search page to be styled.
The 'Thumbnails Tab' lets you turn thumbnails of your search results on or off.
